Morgan Smalls clears 6-0.25 in HJ and adds LJ, TJ wins By Mary Albl of DyeStat Morgan Smalls is a big-time leaper. At the Class 4A and 2A North Carolina NCHSAA State Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, the Panther Creek sophomore swept the jumping events to lead her team to a Class 4A state title. Smalls set a state meet record in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, 1/4 inches. She added titles in the long jump (19-3.5) and triple (40-7.50). Just as impressive in 2A was North Carolina-bound Nicole Barnes of T.W. Andrews. The senior won the long jump (18-7.5), triple jump (36-8), 100 hurdles (13.99) and 300 hurdles (44.37). In the Class 4A 300 hurdles, junior Sierra Fletcher of Southeast Raleigh ran 41.87, which is currently a US#8 and state-leading time. Maya Singletary of Hoke County won the 4A 400 in a state meet record time of 53.42 seconds. Sophomore Josh Harden of Ashe County won the 2A 400 meters (47.99). Junior Randolph Ross of Garner raced to a 4A 400 title in 47.58. Josh Moore of Craven won 2A titles in the the 100 (10.93) and 200 (21.96). Landon Parker of Mount Pleasant won the 2A high jump (6-8), while Idris Bernard won Mallard Creek also cleared 6-8 to win the 4A crown. Junior Lindsay Absher of West Forsyth won the 4A pole vault title, clearing 13-3. High Point Central senior TiCoiya Gidderon won the 4A 800 (2:13.76). In the throws, Veronica Fraley of Wakefield recorded the best marks of the day, winning the 4A discus (142-2) and shot put (47-2). Junior Chance Crawford of North Mecklenburg swept the 4A boys throws, winning the discus (170-3) and shot put (58-4). Class 3A at Ravenscroft, Raleigh Ben Mitchell of Forsyth Country Day won the 3,200 in a time of 9:21.67. In the boys 1,600, Coleman Mitchell of Cary Academy won in 4:21.85. Logan Jones of Charlotte Christian won a narrow 400 in 49.15, edging out Keyvuan Cobb of Christ School (49.15) by nine thousandths of a second. DeMarkes Stradford of Charlotte Latin won the 100 dash in 10.61 and placed second in the 200. Sydney Scott of Charlotte Latin won the long jump, leaping 17-8.25, and also won the triple jump, going 36-10. She added a 200 title, running 25.08. Class 1A at Campbell University, Buies Creek Fayetteville’s Nashya Pagan won the 100 and 200 titles.
