Westerly girls, Bishop Hendricken boys win team titles in R.I. By Mary Albl of DyeStat The Westerly girls won four events Saturday at the Rhode Island (RIIL) State Track and Field Championships held at Brown University. Those wins helped Westerly tally 99 points, capped by a victory in the 4x400 relay to finish off the meet in style. Barrington was second with 52 points. Westerly also got wins from Randi Burr in the 3,000 meters, Megan Albamonti in the javelin, and the 4x800 relay. Portsmouth standout distance runner Nikki Merrill picked up wins in the 800 meters (2:13.45) and 1,500 meters (4:37.73). Aliya Barrows of St. Mary-Bay View won the 200-400 double with 25.52 and 56.81. Gianna Rao of Ponaganset threw 180-9 to defend her state title in the hammer. On the boys side, Bishop Hendricken scored 107 points to win the team crown. Led by senior Sean Meehan's 8:34.21 victory in the 3,000 meters, the Hawks went 1-2-3 to score big points in the event. Bishop Hendricken junior Duwuan Edwards won the 300-meter hurdles (39.81) and placed third in the 100 hurdles (15.27). Senior Cebastian Gentil of East Greenwich set a meet record in the 800 meters, clocking 1:53.21. Jacob Furland of Classical won the hammer with 212-8 for season's best.
